Chip and Dale first appeared as two rambunctious chipmunks in the 1943 cartoon short Private Pluto, and debuted with their names in 1947s Chip an Dale. The duo appeared in a total of 24 shorts, typically causing mayhem and frustration for characters like Donald Duck and Pluto. In Two Chips and a Miss, the brothers vie for the attention of the charismatic Clarice, a singer at the Acorn Club. After a musical showdown, the boys tried to plant a kiss on the lovely Clarice, but oops missed!
While Chip and Dale may look similar, they are different in both appearance and personality. Chip sports a small black nose and smooth hair, and tends to be the more logical of the two. Dale has a larger, reddish nose and unruly hair and acts a bit dim-witted. Their names are a pun on the name of the 18th-century English cabinet maker and furniture designer, Thomas Chippendale, suggested by Bill "Tex" Henson, a story artist at the studio.
